Five Sessions on How to Start Your Food Business and be ready to capture the sales during the holiday season

August 5thSetting up the Business:

An overview of the legal issues, the insurance requirements, the health and safety licenses, and all the basics of getting started. Will also take a tour of the facility.

August 12th4P's- Price, Producing, Packaging, & Product:

You have to know your prices, the actual costs and what you can charge. Include in the pricing is the type of packaging and how to actually produce your product. Bring your calculator! YOU MUST BRING A RECIPE THAT HAS THE RAW INGREDIENT COSTS INCLUDED!

August 19th Pitching your Product to the right Customer: 
If you don't sell your product then are you a business? Do you have your sound-bites ready? Do you know who will buy your product? This information will affect the look of your product. This is where you start to focus some of the talking points for your website and printed material.


August 26th - Targeted Marketing: 
Where will you sell? Identifying your market and formulating a plan. Practicing your elevator speech...then getting out to sell!


September 9th - Graduation Ceremony and Showcase your Products: 
For Graduation you will be showcasing your delicious products.

Bring samples of your product for all to taste; bring your business cards/ brochures. Graduation certificates will be presented.

The keynote speaker will be someone from the food industry and we will be inviting our sponsors as well as others. You are welcome to bring family and friends to celebrate your accomplishments.

This workshop helps participants develop their business idea, organize their start-up process and create a strategy to launch their business. It also covers key elements of how to start a business including: financing, business registration, permit & licenses, and tax related issues. Learn how to setup a company and avoid missteps that can cost you time and money.

The Queen's Women's Business Center is Funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disability if requested at least two weeks in advance.

Cost: FREE (Thanks to a grant from the SBA)
Enroll for a 3-day course (08/17, 08/18, 08/25) to become a licensed Home Improvement Contractor Business. In this class you will:
  • Get training to become a licensed home improvement contractor with the NYC's Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Learn from a qualified instructor on running a professional business, avoid liability, and become a successful entrepreneur.
  • Work with a business advisor in filing ALL necessary appropriate paperwork.

This class normally costs $200, but it will be offered free as part of a grant from the SBA. In addition, support from the Queens Public Library is giving a rebate of up to $200 for all people who take the test.

All people who take the class are required to take the exam, which costs $475. In addition, you are expected to register your business and as a reminder it costs $170 to register a corporation.

Small Business Disaster Recovery Workshop

When: August 26, 2013
Where: Entrepreneur Space, 36-46 37th St., Long Island City, NY 11101
Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Cost: Free

Co-sponsored by QEDC, Operation HOPE, and SCORE, this free workshop on disaster recovery planning for local small businesses in the NY Metro Area will be presented by Agility Recovery and will focus on disaster preparation and continuity planning including:

  • Recognizing threats and risks to your business
  • Protecting the physical workspace, communications, and commuters
  • Determining the right insurance options for a company
  • Developing a continuity plan and communicating it with employees

Strategies on how to recover and grow after a disaster will also be key topics. 

In addition, Operation HOPE will be talking about financial recovery after disasters. All attendees affected by Hurricane Sandy will receive a free ProtectMyID membership, including a credit report, daily credit monitoring, identity theft resolution, and $1,000,000 in Identity Theft Insurance.
